castAway came to us with a simple goal: create a dual-screen mobile experience compatible with any smartphone. We explored multiple form iterations that would securely mount castAway's magnetic hinge onto a smartphone, allowing the user to attach castAway's second screen and other accessories.

A second screen designed to fit any smartphone
To create a truly accessible dual-screen experience, we worked with castAway to ensure their magnetic hinge could be mounted to any smartphone. With the hinge attached to a phone, castAway’s custom Chromium-based second screen can then be snapped on and paired via castAway’s app.
Castaway’s unique magnetic hinge makes it easy to fold the screen open or closed—or to remove it completely.
Stick-on Hinge
The first iteration we explored utilizes 3M adhesive to mount the magnetic hinge to any smartphone.
Slim Magnetic Clip
To minimize obstruction of the side of devices, we envisioned a slimmer, T-shaped design. To adjust for different sized smartphones, this unit extends via a ratcheting system and features a push-to-release lock.
Adjustable Clamping System
The selected concept utilized sliding grooves for size adjustments, combined with a folding latch to provide a secure fit.
