IMTS 2014

CHOi Design visited the IMTS show to stay up to date with currently technologies being used in the industry today.

IMTS is one of the largest manufacturing technology shows in the world, and it is held right here in Chicago! CHOi Design visited the show to stay up to date with currently technologies being used in the industry today.

There was a large 3D printing presence at the show, with Local Motors creating the world’s first ever 3D printed car (the Strati) live at the show. The printing process took 44 hours, and the car will be assembled on site over 2 days. Components like the battery, motor, wiring, and suspension will not be 3D printed. The Strati uses 40 parts, where a traditionally manufactured car has over 20,000.

We were also impressed with the 3D printers that EnvisionTEC brought to the show. The resolution can produce extremely fine detail and production-like surface finishes. The material is also self-supporting, so it does not use a secondary support material that would need to be dissolved later on.

There was also a vast display of CNC laser cutters, water jets, and routers. One of the water jets even cut out a bottle opener for us to take back to the office!

And of course, there were plenty of robot arms and fun displays that were a blast to see!
